Lewes and Brighton East

CHEAPER AND FAIRER

WHAT IS HAPPENING AND WHY?

The independent Boundary Commission has proposed changes to our Parliamentary seats that seek to increase the fairness of constituency boundaries as well as reducing the cost of Government by £12 million. The number of seats in England is being reduced from 533 to 502 and all parliamentary constituencies (with the exception of the Isle of Wight) must have a similar number of electors. The changes will be implemented at the next General Election in 2015 and our existing MPs will continue to represent their existing constituencies until then.

DO I LIVE OR WORK IN THE NEW SEAT?

Under the initial proposals, most of the existing Brighton Kemptown seat and part of the Lewes seat would be renamed "Lewes and Brighton East" and would no longer contain the Brighton & Hove ward of Queen's Park.  The current Brighton Kemptown areas of East Brighton, Woodingdean, Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, Rottingdean, Ovingdean, Saltdean, Telscombe Cliffs, Telscombe Village and Peacehaven would form 70.54% of the new seat. All of Lewes town, Barcombe and Hamsey, Chailey and Wivelsfield, Ditchling and Westmeston, Plumpton, Streat, East Chiltington and St John (Without) and Kingston would form the remaining 29.46% constituency. Most of the other parts of the existing Lewes seat will form part of a new Uckfield seat.

PLEASE SUPPORT THE PROPOSAL

The Boundary Commission recently consulted on their initial proposals. The closing date for this consultation was 5 December 2011. However the Boundary Commission are now considering the submissions from the first round of consultation and will put forward revised proposals in 2012. At this point there will be a second consultation period where you will be able to give your views on the new proposals. So do keep checking www.lewesandbrightoneast.com for updates.
